Giffgaff Launches 500Mbps Full Fibre Broadband Trial in the UK

Giffgaff, owned by Telefónica and operating through O2's MVNO platform, has begun connecting its first customers to a new high-speed broadband trial using Virgin Media's 10Gbps capable full fibre network.

On July 7th, 2025, giffgaff initiated a trial service offering 500Mbps full fibre broadband to select users across the UK. The trial employs nexfibre’s wholesale FTTP network, which is accessible to over 2 million UK premises and marks giffgaff’s first foray into wholesale fibre services. The trial, which will last for 12 months, is available at a heavily discounted rate of £10 per month, providing a glimpse into the provider’s future broadband offerings.

Customers in the trial report receiving proper IP addresses (not CGNAT), symmetric speeds, and equipment branded by Virgin Media and Arcadyan. The setup typically includes an Optical Network Terminal from Arcadyan and Amazon’s Eero 6+ router, though some ambiguity remains about third-party router compatibility.

Initial speeds have exceeded the advertised 500Mbps, a common trend with Virgin Media’s early testing phases. The ongoing trial aims to evaluate customer experience before broader commercial deployment, with plans for varied packages and pricing expected in future launches.

While IPv6 support is not yet available, the trial exemplifies giffgaff’s strategic move into the high-speed broadband market, leveraging existing infrastructure and partnerships to enhance its service offerings.
