OpTIC Path Program Celebrates Award Win and Inaugural Rodeo

The Fiber Broadband Association’s Optical Telecom Installer Certification (OpTIC Path) program marked a major milestone with two notable events. First, it received the 2025 Workforce Development Award from Broadband Communities, recognizing its role in preparing the workforce for fiber optic network deployment. Deborah Kish, Vice President of Research and Workforce Development at the Fiber Broadband Association, emphasized the program’s importance, stating, “OpTIC Path has become a critical engine for workforce readiness across North America.”

The award was presented at the association’s annual summit, underscoring the momentum behind the initiative, which is fostering collaboration among colleges, students, and employers.

The second highlight was the organization’s first OpTIC Path Rodeo, held during Fiber Connect 2025 in Nashville. This competitive event gathered graduates of the program from various regions across the country to test their skills in fiber splicing, troubleshooting, and technical knowledge.

OpTIC Path is a comprehensive training program delivered through community colleges, workforce boards, and training providers. It aims to equip students with the skills necessary to install, test, troubleshoot, and maintain fiber optic networks. The program is on track to graduate 600 fiber technicians this year alone, with a goal of reaching 1,200 graduates over the next five years.

Recent expansions include its inclusion in the telecommunications curriculum at the Wireless Infrastructure Association’s (WIA) Telecommunications Education Center. Additionally, the program was featured on the North Carolina Careers site, following endorsement from the North Carolina Workforce Credential Advisory Council.

Deborah Kish highlighted the importance of a balanced curriculum, with approximately 40% theoretical and 60% practical training, to ensure deep understanding and practical skills for students. The program’s emphasis on comprehensive training aims to fill the industry’s increasing demand for competent fiber technicians.
